Mistakes When Booking a Holiday Rental and How to Avoid Them – IP Fuengirola 2026: dates, times, activities and everything you need to know
If you’re planning to spend your holidays on the Costa del Sol this summer, there’s something you should know: May is the key month to book properly… or make an expensive mistake. Every year we see the same thing: travellers who wait too long, choose the wrong area or book without checking important details. The result is clear: they pay more, have fewer options and often don’t enjoy the experience as they expected.
Here are the most common mistakes when booking a holiday rental in Fuengirola and Mijas… and how to avoid them.
MISTAKE 1: Waiting too long to book for summer
In May, for example, demand is already soaring and many international travellers (especially from the United Kingdom, Germany and Nordic countries) book weeks or even months in advance. What happens if you wait until June or July? Prices increase (sometimes by 20–40%), the quality of available properties drops and you also miss out on the best locations.
What to do instead: Book between January and May at the latest, as this is when you can still find better prices, more variety and well-located properties.
MISTAKE 2: Choosing the wrong area
Not all areas of Fuengirola and Mijas offer the same experience, and choosing badly can ruin your holiday.
For example:
- Area too central → night-time noise
- Residential developments far away → you need a car for everything
- Areas without services → daily inconvenience
How to choose the right area?: It depends on your type of trip:
- Families → Los Boliches and Sohail area (peaceful and with excellent services)
- Couples → Fuengirola town centre (atmosphere all day long, great places to enjoy gastronomy and culture, close to everything)
- Relaxation → Mijas Costa and Sohail area (quieter residential developments slightly away from the hustle and bustle, swimming pools, incredible views)
MISTAKE 3: Not checking whether the accommodation has a tourist licence
This is more important than it seems: in Andalusia, holiday rentals must have an official licence. If they don’t, your booking could be cancelled, you may experience problems during your stay and the quality standard is usually lower.
To avoid this kind of problem: Make sure the accommodation is registered and the management company is professional. For example, at GR ESTATES, we only work with verified and legal properties.
MISTAKE 4: Trusting only the photos
Photos can be very misleading, especially now considering that many companies use AI to enhance them. The common problems we see are spaces appearing larger in pictures, locations being unclear and even missing information about the surroundings of the holiday rental. We recommend that when booking accommodation for your stay:
- Read the apartment descriptions carefully in full and make sure you have no unanswered questions.
- Look for reviews (if available) from other people; if they do not appear on the company’s website, search for them on Google.
- Trust specialised local agencies with several years of experience.
MISTAKE 5: Not taking extras and hidden costs into account
Many travellers only look at the nightly rate and then end up with surprises. Based on our experience as holiday rental managers, we advise you to check final cleaning fees, deposits, late check-in charges and parking costs.
Extra tip: Before booking, check the full total price and, if necessary, call the agency with any questions before paying so you can avoid unpleasant surprises. In our case, Andrea, who is responsible for our rental apartments, will happily assist you by phone or WhatsApp with any questions you may have.
MISTAKE 6: Not thinking about transport
This is a very common mistake, especially among those visiting the Costa del Sol who choose Mijas as their accommodation, for example. Why? Because some properties are in spectacular locations... but you absolutely need a car.
- If you don’t want a car → look for central areas where everything is well connected by buses, trains, taxis, etc.
- If you hire a car → you can opt for better views, better prices by staying further from the centre and visit several tourist areas in one trip (Nerja, Ronda, Fuengirola, Mijas Pueblo, etc.)
Booking a holiday rental is not just about finding something beautiful; it’s about making decisions that affect your whole experience. If you book early, choose the right area and trust professionals like us: you pay less, enjoy more and avoid extra problems. At GR ESTATES we help you find selected, verified properties in the best locations. So, if you’re thinking of coming this summer, now is the time to book!
